Does export?format=pdf work on a private doc?

Only for people who already have access to the doc and are signed in to Google. For the link to work for anyone else, the doc has to be shared with “Anyone with the link”.

Does the export link update when I edit the doc?

Yes, as long as it is the same doc. The URL contains the doc ID, so the moment you start a fresh document you get a new URL and every old link still points at the old doc.

Can I turn the link off without changing the URL?

Not with the export trick: the only off switch is unsharing the doc, which kills the URL for good. A via link can be paused and brought back on the same URL.

The Google Docs export?format=pdf trick, and when it breaks

There’s a well-known Google Docs URL trick: take the sharing link, docs.google.com/document/d/DOC_ID/edit, and swap /edit for /export?format=pdf. Anyone opening that URL downloads a PDF of the doc as it stands right now. No add-ons, no exports, and it stays current: edit the doc and the next download reflects it.

If you need a quick PDF link for a doc you’re happy to make public, it genuinely works. But if the link is going somewhere durable, an email signature, a LinkedIn profile, a client’s bookmarks, you should know where it breaks.

The URL is welded to one doc

The export link inherits everything from the doc it points at:

It needs public sharing. For strangers, the trick only works while the doc is shared with “Anyone with the link”. Tighten sharing later and every copy of the link out there stops working.
A new doc means a new URL. Rewrite your résumé from scratch or start this quarter’s rate card as a fresh document, and it gets a new doc ID. You re-publish, you re-send, and everyone has to re-download from the new link, while the old link keeps serving the old doc.
There’s no off switch. You can’t pause the link, and you can’t point the same URL at a different doc. Delete the doc and the link is dead.

That’s the trade: the trick keeps the PDF current, but it can’t keep the link current. The URL is a side effect of the doc, not something you own.

A link that outlives the doc

The export URL contains the doc ID, and the doc behind it is shared with anyone holding the link. That means the link doesn’t just serve a PDF: anyone can trim the URL back to /edit and open the live document in Google Docs, comments and all. You published the doc, not the PDF.

A via link is the opposite. Your doc stays private in your Drive. via only gets read access to the docs you pick through the Google Picker, and readers only ever receive the PDF, no Google account required.
